European Photography 88 is the result of an experiment. We have tracked down photographs on the Internet that spontaneously fit the concept of this magazine, and selected bodies of work that can easily be regarded as artistic statements.

The focus was not on spectacular individual images (which would have been nice and simple), but on projects that express a deeper commitment with a particular subject. In the course of our research, an overriding theme that emerged was the self-portrait – a genuine theme which we present here in numerous, though not exhaustive, approaches. We have excluded the field of pornography, for example, which would have required a whole issue of its own. With one exception, we have also restricted ourselves to one single image platform, Flickr, a community that makes it relatively easy to approach their members.

The photographers represented in this issue are not artists, nor are they photographers in the traditional sense. They are net photographers. They represent a new type of image-maker, people who use photography to visually explore the world, to present themselves in that world, and to then share their findings with everyone in the world. And who invite us, far removed from the museums and fairs, the curators and critics, to form our own judgment about what is art and what not – and about whether this question still plays a role in the net at all.
